Inclusive Community

The students in COMN 2040 are excited to partner听with the Colorado Sikh community and 桃子直播 to听host the 4th Annual Langar@桃子直播 on May 31, 2025. This event is part of the听Inclusive Community听course, which provides a听4D听learning experience and develops skills to serve the public good. The 桃子直播 and C+V is committed to community initiatives and partnerships with organizations to break down barriers and make positive change. Our community seeks to make a difference in the world through our Five Strategic Imperatives with broader student engagement outside the classroom, meaningful connections with others, and a diversity of experiences - the Langar@桃子直播 accomplishes these and more.

Langar (a free Indian meal unifying diverse race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and class identities) is a Sikh tradition that brings together people of all backgrounds, religions, and social status to prepare and share a free Indian meal and build connection. Participating in a Sikh Langar is seen as a way to practice selflessness, generosity, and service. It creates an intercultural, interfaith, and interracial space to celebrate humanity and oneness, and resist division, violence, and bigotry.

The is an exciting one. Last year's event served 800 meals with 200 volunteers while incorporating music, activities, dialogue, and reconnection.听As one student commented,听鈥淭he Sikh community is about giving and not expecting anything in return because everyone that attends gives something, anything, no matter if it's large of small, and does so because it's who one is and what they want to be like when they attend a Langar.鈥

For centuries, the Sikh community has practiced and celebrated Langar. In our modern world of technology where we are all closer than geographical constraints, the ability to share tools for connection make intercultural Langar more accessible and brings the promise of Langar to bridge divides and connect like-minded people in focus. Come join us!

Guidelines For Interacting With Disabled People

  • Focus on the person, not their disabilities.
  • Do not infantilize a person with a disability. Treat them as you would anyone else.
  • Speak directly to the individual, not the interpreter, companion, or attendant.
  • Listen carefully, wait to reply until you are certain the individual has finished speaking.
  • Use the correct words: Say 鈥渄isability.鈥 Do not say 鈥渉andicapped, special needs, or differently-abled.鈥
  • Do NOT use derogatory words such as 鈥渕idget,鈥 or 鈥渃rippled鈥 or terms like 鈥渧ictim of,鈥 鈥渟uffers from.鈥
  • Do not touch or interact with a service animal without permission.
  • Do not assume a person needs assistance. Wait to be asked before offering help. Ex: Do not start pushing a person鈥檚 wheelchair without permission as many consider it an extension of their physical being.
  • Be sensitive about personal contact and space. Do not touch or move a person鈥檚 mobility or other devices without permission.
  • Respect an individual鈥檚 privacy regarding their disability, unless they initiate a conversation. Do not ask intrusive and inappropriate questions such as 鈥淲hat is wrong with you?鈥 or 鈥淗ow do you use the restroom?鈥
  • Introduce yourself and say when you are leaving if interacting with a person who is blind.
  • Make sure there is a clear view of your face and mouth when communicating, especially for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
